The second water Solution would be low-cost, containerized desalination for remote communities, while removing the need for reliable grid energy. (This solution involves partnering up with a company in Finland)
A step-change for off-grid desalination
The world currently has approximately 74 million m3/d of operational desalination capacity, providing water for domestic, industrial and agricultural use in over 50 countries. Desalination technology is increasingly efficient and affordable, making it a natural alternative to unsustainable groundwater extraction or increasingly erratic rainfall. However, with an energy consumption that can reach 5-8 kWh/m3 for small-scale seawater applications, desalination requires a reliable and cost-effective energy source for the technology to remain economical. With many of the world’s water scarce regions also suffering from a combination of unreliable power grids, patchy grid coverage, or high energy costs, many of the people in greatest need of desalinated water remain unable to access it.
